Cinemagraph (extra credit submission)

Photoshop Tools Used:
  • Layer mask
  • Screen grab
  • Brush tool

This has been one of my favorite weeks in this class. I feel like I learned so much and I had a ton of fun working on this piece. I was enchanted by the cinemagraph examples. They just looked so mesmerizing. I decided to try my hand at them and I thought some footage I had shot of plants blowing in the wind would be perfect. I used a layer mask of a screen grab image over the video. Then I used a layer mask to reveal the plants I wanted to move. I was able to take my time and either add to or take away from the layer mask to reveal the perfect amount of the video. It was difficult at certain points because the plants at the bottom in the background are the same as the ones I want moving, but I wanted the background ones to stay still. I had to really zoom in and take my time with the brush tool to make sure I was just capturing the plants in the foreground. One thing I wish I could improve would be the loop cut. I tried a bunch of different clip lengths to try to hide the loop but I couldn't get it to loop perfectly. I guess this goes to show that you should always get more footage than you think you need (I had about 20 seconds to work with, maybe if I had more I could've found a good point for the perfect loop). I really want to try using this skill again. I will have to think of some footage I can shoot and transform into a cinemagraph.
